Go Wireless with the Square Reader and Your iPhone 7, 8, or X
If you’ve upgraded to newer Apple device, such as an iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone X, XS, or XR, or the newly announced iPad Pro — or another phone without a headphone jack — you’re probably wondering if you can keep relying on Square to take credit card payments. (Or if you need to keep an old phone with a headphone jack just to keep processing payments.)
Rest assured, iPhone users can absolutely keep selling with Square. Square sellers have options and we’re here to keep supporting you. Here’s the lowdown on how to continue taking card payments with Square and your iPhone:
Accept contactless and chip card payments
Square’s Reader for contactless and chip connects to your smartphone or tablet by Bluetooth LE, so you don’t need to worry about a smartphone without a headphone jack.

The Square Reader for contactless and chip costs just $59 and also allows you to accept eftpos chip cards.
A magstripe reader also comes in the box so you can still swipe international credit cards without a chip.
Take payments with your iPhone 7, 8 or X
To accepted dipped or swiped payments using the Square Reader for chip cards and your iPhone 7, 9 or X, use the lightning adapter included in the box with your phone. This adaptor has a headphone jack that plugs directly into the phone’s charging port.
New Otterbox case for iPhone 7
Our partners at Otterbox have released a new uniVERSE case for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The case lets you attach Square Reader for contactless and chip to the back of your iPhone, making it easier to accept contactless cards, chip cards and mobile wallets when you’re selling on the go. When you’re done selling, simply slide the reader off the case and you’ve got a durable and secure cover for the rest of the day.
Accept payments with an iPad or tablet
If you’re selling with an iPad or tablet device you can continue to use Square Reader for chip cards, as these devices still have the standard headphone jack — but it’s worth noting you won’t be able to accept contactless or eftpos branded card payments with this reader.
However you choose to sell — Square has got you covered.
