Empowering Your Employees with Square Point of Sale

As your business grows, it’s exciting to start building a team to help with the heavy lifting. Square Point of Sale can help with some of that lifting, too. It’s designed for simplicity and ease, and this extends to your team members as well. Here are some pro tips for first-timers to help them get to grips with the essentials and be up and running in no time.

Firstly, find a quiet moment to let your employees try out Square Point of Sale and show them how everything works. You can suggest that they download Square to their smartphone or tablet (it’s free!) and create an account to test it out in their own time. Then go over the basics:

Record a transaction

It’s simple to record a transaction in Square Point of sale. Simply enter the amount of the payment, or select a preset item to add to the current sale. Tap Charge and select the payment type and tendered amount.

Pro tip: If the customer offers multiple forms of payment, select Split Tender.

Send or print receipts

Once a transaction is complete, your employee can offer a print, email or SMS receipt to the customer, who will be prompted to enter their phone number or email address on the receipt screen for delivery.

Pro tip: Not connected to Wifi when sending email or SMS receipts? No worries! The receipts are saved locally and sent as soon as you’re connected again.

Record a refund

Square Point of Sale lets you issue full or partial refunds through the POS, to ensure your books are always balanced. Return to your Activity screen in the menu on the app, locate and tap the sale you wish to refund, then hit Issue Refund. Follow the steps onscreen to issue a full or partial refund, and don’t forget to tell your employees to leave a reason so you can track what’s happening when you’re not there.

You want your employees to be able to solve any problems before they come up, so we recommend talking them through our troubleshooting tips. That way you can help head off any late night or weekend calls (which are unlikely but always good to avoid).
