Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is an advanced form of flexibility training that involves both the stretching and contracting of the targeted muscle group. Initially developed as a rehabilitation technique, PNF is highly effective in improving flexibility, increasing range of motion (ROM), and enhancing muscular strength and coordination.

The technique typically comprises three main phases:

    1    Passive Stretch: The muscle group to be targeted is gently stretched to its limit. This phase is conducted by a therapist or a partner to ensure proper alignment and avoid injury.

    2    Isometric Contraction: While the muscle is in the stretched position, the individual contracts the muscle group isometrically (without changing the muscle length) against a resistance provided by the therapist or a partner. This contraction usually lasts for 5 to 10 seconds. This phase is key for activating proprioceptors and stimulating muscle spindles, which helps in relaxing the muscle after the contraction.
